Is experience important for cleaning job?
Asked by wendaylou2
I was laid off from my job as an administrative assistant about a month ago. Although I've applied at many many places, I can't seem to find another job in my field, and am not qualified to do anything else. I want to apply to a job as a housekeeper for a local upscale hotel, but I don't have any professional cleaning experience. Has anyone worked as a maid/cleaning person before-how important is experience to getting hired for this kind of job? Should I try it?

Firstly, there is a whole lot of difference between a cleaner and a housekeeper. I was a housemaid at a private hotel and as a housemaid I did a lot of cleaning and general maids duties. Cleaning, bed making, some laundry work and ironing to name a few. The housekeeper oversees the housemaids and chambermaids and is responsible for the efficient running of all the housekeeping staff and services. To be a housekeeper you would have to have worked in hospitality for some time in a similar role. To get a job as a junior maid should not be to difficult as long as you have an eye for detail and are willing to learn. You will have to be comfortable with cleaning up after other people make a mess of the rooms you are charged with keeping clean. It can be a bit disheartening at times to see yesterdays sparkling bathroom turned into todays cess pit and you have to get it cleaned up again ready for the next guest or even the same person who trashed it. I suggest you go for any hotel service job, even a kitchen maid / dishwasher and work your way up. One tip, if you do get a job as a maid never pick up towels , sheets etc. without checking for foreign (sharp) objects first.

Apply. The most important thing is good references.
