I don't know how to apply for a parttime job. Can anyone walk me through the steps and tell me what to expect?
Asked by NM
I'm a college student, and my family is low on money since my father died. I've had 3 jobs, but they were all offered to me through my school. They were office assistant type jobs, and since they only offered me hours M-F 8-5, I found it hard to keep up with school. I want a job that can offer me hours on the weekends, so I was wondering how to apply at a retail store, for instance. Or even at a coffee shop. After I ask for an application and fill it out, what do I do? Do I attach my resume to that application? What if they don't have paper applications? Or what if I don't know the exact position I'm applying for? Do I ask for the manager and hand them the application directly? How do I know if they are even hiring? What sort of things should I avoiding telling them so as not to turn them off me right away? Should I check in after turning in my application? Also, I'm kind of a quiet type, so I don't tend to give off great first impressions. I'm not very "outgoing." Any advice?

Turn in the application with no resume unless they ask for one (usually they don't for just a part time job). If they don't have paper applications, ask someone how you apply. If they don't have a paper application then usually you'll talk directly to the manager. If they're interested in hiring you, they should call you for an interview. If you don't know what position you want, just choose or write something like "any position". You don't need to turn it in to the manager directly, just ask where you should hand in your application. Talk about the work you've done over the years. As for behavior advice, don't look so nervous. Just relax and tell them everything they want to know in a calm manner. Everything should go fine.
