Check with the state, local or federal agencies. Federal is Federal Bureau of Prisons. They can advise you on openings and qualifications. Some prisons are operated by private companies, like Wackenhut. You might try their website

Prisons are run by the government, so you'd have to apply at a Web site that advertises for federal or state job openings. I doubt that the job consists solely of opening the mail -- more likely, opening the mail would be only one of many tasks done by someone who would probably be classified as a General Clerk II or III. You'd probably also do filing, responding to e-mail, keeping track of minutes of meetings, making photocopies, ordering office supplies ... in other words, all the generic office jobs you'd do in any generic office, except your office would happen to be inside a big iron fence.

Check job openings within the state your looking for. It will break down job categories within a penal institution. However, a private prison will specifically request the position of mail room clerk if the position is open. Nevertheless, the job of a mail room clerk has more responsibility than you think. Its not just sending and receiving mail. You must read (scan) all incoming and outgoing mail, review packages for contraband, conduct investigations within your area on hidden messages etc. You have to be security minded while working this position. Allowing 1 piece of mail to go in or out that is considered contraband could result in a riot or even murder. Good luck.
