Career Questions and Answers
Is underwater welding a good career to get into, and be able to raise a child?
Asked by Scott D
I have just finished a welding program, and now I just enrolled into a school in san diego for commercial diving/underwater welding, my girlfriend and I have a child on the way. I just want to be able to give my family what they need and also do something I have dreamed about doing.

Most of the time you wont be welding and depends where you work you can be making more if you go into a ironworkers union. My welding teacher on the weekend does some work under local 7 which is the iron workers union in the Boston area and gets paid $80 a hour. Also it is safer then under water welding and the average under water welder only last around 10 years in that career because it takes a toll on your body more then regular welding.

That sounds like a really fun job, albeit probably dangerous.
I don't know the answer to your question, but it seems like underwater welding is a specialized niche, so it probably pays decent. I'm also guessing that a job like that will take you away from home for long periods of time, so you're family might miss you some.
Anyways, good luck, and congratgulations on the baby!

OK as long as you weren't raising the child underwater.
Yeah, sounds like a good plan. I'm told welding pays really well...underwater welding probably pays a whole lot more because of the risks.
Go ahead with your dream job. Marry your girlfriend. Raise your son/daughter to have a good work ethic like you do.
Congratulations!!
