Hi -
On the less depressing side of things, it only about half matters what type of degree and certification you have. I know people who have a Master's Degree in Computer Science and whatever certification you care to mention, but they have no idea WTF they're doing - because it's all "book" knowledge. On the other hand, I've worked with people who have a plain old CS degree, but they're smart and they work hard, and they're pretty darn good at what they do.
Point is, don't assume that you'll walk in somewhere and flash your certification and degree and everyone will be throwing contracts at you. Take a Junior DBA job to start, get some real world experience working on real databases, read a little bit each day on forums like http://asktom.oracle.com and http://otn.oracle.com but concentrate on getting experience on the job. You can only learn so much from a book, but you actually have to do it in real life to make a career out of it.
And don't give up.

good luck, that is what i have to say. i have the degree and no cert. I worked in the computer industry for 2 years and got laid off. they used 1970's software took me a while to learn it since i was up to date with vb and the rest of the new stuff. now looking for a job everyone wants vb.net and a ton of stuff i don't know. i say forget the computer gig, you are out of date to fast and they can find cheap new people anywhere. go for a state job with tons of perks and you wont be out of date in 2 years.
PS - if you really want to be in computers, get a 4 year degree! trust me there is a very little difference between the two but that is what they all want. and if you don't have one they will send you a nice letter saying "Sorry".
