How to get a sold job?
Asked by Dave S
I used to work as an electricians helper getting paid $8 an hour to work in houses without heat or AC turned on or sometimes even installed yet... As you could imagine, I got bored with this type of work real fast. I did find one company that I really enjoyed working with at one point but they had a talk to their other worker who was about to be fired and he ended up changing his ways making me the one to loose the position... Anyways I worked for about 3 different electrical companies though a three year period and I only have a solid record of what start/end date I worked for them, also what the owners first and last name was. The other companies I worked for so long ago that I don't remember what date I started/ended at and I have any idea what the owners names where either. Well I've been filling out some job application and they all ask for info like that... Is it really important to provide this info if you want a job? Also, does anyone have any tips on getting a job? I'm off from college classes until September and have been applying to places around the area for 2 months now prepared to work full time until classes get started again and yet I have not gotten a single response from any store... I'm extremely tight on cash and living in NJ so I need a job...and fast... or ill be stuck living with my parents forever... I forgot to add that the other two companies were small family owned companies... they paid with Cash but even so I always put it into the tax records at that time of the year. my understanding is they call the old companies and ask if you worked for them during the posted time frame as well as how well you worked. I did manage to post a phone # and hourly pay but when it came to dates and names, I was lost... So Im hoping the # and my name was enough for them...

Yes, it is very important to provide details of your previous employment. A prospective employer needs to do background checks and criminal/credit checks. They also check if you are a tax cheat. So, if you do not put past employment history down, they assume you have something to hide, and you will very likely be dropped from consideration. I suggest you contact the previous employers and request the info. they should have your personnel files.

Guess the dates, its not that important No big gaps in the time line Look up the phone numbers They will be more interested in what you can do
