Surgical tech to Med assistant?
Asked by scrubtechchick
I've been a surgical for two years and though i enjoy it, it's very stressful, it was a two year program. I scrub and assist the surgeon by passinstruments, getting set up, clean pt, when procedure is finished and cleaning room and accounting for all of our equipment for the procedure. I'm currently not working and wanted to know if it would be out of line for me to apply for some medical assitant positions even though I don't have Med assistant certificate. I do feel more than qualified for what they do, how would I respond when asked what my qualifications are. I need to work.

Salary will definitely be lower, but... in truth, the key to a happy life is to do what you want, and to think of money second or third or fourth... :)
One comment... sure, you have shown ability and probably could do medical assisting. But technically, you are NOT a medical assistant. This means that, in spite of your surgical assistant experience, SOMEONE is going to have to train you for a bit to make you functional as a MA. A lot will depend on whether the doctor's office wants to take that time, or if they can afford to take that time.
One other thing that might help.... if you can convince them that you REALLY want to do this and you're going to stay put for a while. They may well worry that you'll get cheesed off by the lower salary and will bolt back to surgery in short order. You'll have to sell your intentions along with yourself.

be prepared to take a HUGE salary cut. medical assistant is pretty much one of the lowest positions in medicine. but if you find surgery too stressful, maybe you should get into something that is less demanding. You will probably still need the certification even though you could do the job

maybe you are burned out...it happens FREQUENTLY in the medical field. Would you consider ER tech? You would get paid more than a mediucal assistant.
Take a break for a while. You will have a different view in a few weeks...good luck!!!!
