Most sales skills are universal-your experince in sales is valuable.
Secondly, think about focusing your search in the restaurant and automotive industries if possible, since you have knowledge/experience. Examples-restaurant sales for food or beverage mfgs. (Kraft, Heinz, Pepsi, etc.) Sales rep for auto aftermarket stuff...(oil, tires)
A big factor could be your willingness to relocate-mfgs. always have sales jobs to fill, but some markets are alot hardere to fill. its a big decision but could make the difference. The most successful sales people and execs in general went to where the opportunities were, they didn't wait for the opportunities to come to them. And some, after a few successful years were able to get re-assigned closer to home when something opened up.
make sure your resume highlight sales skills and successes-generated x revenue, x new accounts, etc.
Good luck!

Your potential employers will understand the state of the automotive industry and make allowances for your experience. The same thing happened in aero after the various wars. I left aero and easily adapted to the chemical industry.
