Career Questions and Answers
For a career, I want to be an animal trainer or vet technician. What exactly do these people "do"?

To be an animal trainer or a vet tech, does it involve a lot of math? As a sophmore in highschool what kind of classes should I be taking? Do you get to be "hands on" with the animals? Are there any requirements? What is the typical day of one?

Hi there,
I work p/t as a cattery attendant in a vet clinic, so I will be able to tell you about what the vet techs do.
They prepare surgical kits/equiptment, assist with handling the animals, assist the veterinarian in check ups. Monitor anesthetic equipment during surgeries, administer medication. Monitor animals pre, during and post procedures and another thing - clean...heaps! They are quite hands on with the animals. Vet techs require degrees, usually 1-2 years after high-school.
Trainers are involved with training animals, such as police dogs, customs dogs... Private trainers assist owners with training their dogs. You will need to take some kind of animal training course.
How about you go to a vet clinic and get some work experience to see what the job is like... it doesn't hurt to try! :)
Good luck

For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search veterinary technicians, animal care and service workers or such. There should be additional websites listed at the end of the entry.
For US colleges: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ
Please steer clear of those online, for-profit schools such as penn foster, stratford career, ITT tech, university of phoenix, strayer and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit': http://www.uopsucks.com
http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search.
