How do you break into the management world when you have 10+ years of Programming Experience under your belt?

I have been working as a software developer (now as technical lead from last 1 years) from last 10+ years. In these 10 years I gained some experience doing project management, new hires, resource management, and technology decisions but nothing "formal" or something that my position title would reflect. I want to make my next move and try for a Development Manager or Project Manager. How should I go about it? Would some sort of certification help me to increase my chances?

If you like project management, the Professional Project Manager (PMP) certification through the Project Management Institute can be worthwhile. If you work for a company with tuition reimbursement, or are willing to pay your own way, you might look into either a graduate certificate, or a degree, in a management topic. You don't have to finish the program to parlay it into a job, just being in the process shows that you are serious about progressing in your career. The main question for techies looking to move into management is: why do you want to make the switch? Hopefully the main motivation isn't higher pay because there are lots of ways to make good money without taking on a position that doesn't fit who you are.

If possible, maybe gain some extra experience in those fields which you have not studied (ie no paper qualifications) and then look into a promotion whilst quoting your experience in you qualified fields aswell as those you have self-taught yourself.
