Career Questions and Answers

I can't decide what to do with my life. Any advice or insight?
Asked by cedarcreekwildcard
I'm a biology major/ art minor and I will be a junior come August. I love animals (horses especially), sports and art. I was pre-vet when I entered college, but now I am considering switching to art education. My major concern is, however, that I won't be able to find a job. I live in Michigan and the economy is terrible. Plus, the pay for an art teacher is poor. I would like to stay close to my family. I've also considered medical/science illustration. But right now, I'm planning on going into physical therapy. But, I'm not 100% sure if that's what I want to do. I've been told that you can get almost any job with any college major. What do you think about that? This whole thing is really bothering me. I've taken numerous career tests, read books, done some job shadowing, visited the career services office MANY times and talked to people in various professions. Anyway, I'm lost. Any advice or other career opportunities you can offer would be great. Oh, and I don't know if a biology major is right for me any more.

When I was young I had the same problem, I lacked direction and needed help. I spoke with a USMC recruiter who lied to me like crazy but still he set me up for the best thing that ever happened to me. Try several branches of today's military, not only will they help you find yourself but they'll train you with skills that will benefit you throughout your life.It was the best time of my life, give it a try...

What you are going through right now is completely normal! I remember when I was in college my major changed about five times. You know when people tell you that you can get a job with any college degree, they are somewhat right....but it completely depends on what you are looking for. Are you looking for something that pays the big bucks, or are you looking for something that will make you happy. If I can tell you from experience, making a lot of money in a job does NOT make you happy. I recently took about a 30% paycut to switch jobs and I have never been happier in my life. Try to think about what makes you most happy in your life. Is it animals, is it being close to your family? When you think of it, it will just feel right and things will just fall into place. And think about it this way....what is the worst thing that could happen? So you get a degree that does not take you to where you want to be in your life. So go back to school...Sure, it will be a few more thousand dollars and a couple more years, but down the road, you will look back and be happy with the decissions you have made. Good luck to you, and please don't lose sleep over this.

Sounds to me as if you're unsure of too many things... Best thing for you IS to listen to yourself. What Do YOU Want? Not friends, family, strangers. What IS "It" that you want? Changing your "Major" or Career Planning does no one any good, if you ARE Miserable, at a job we think you should do. Don't worry over your Economic-Climate, either. Your Attitude and Actions WILL make or break you even In The Best Economies. Did I also mention Courage? It takes Courage, not much, to Think and Do for you FIRST! Always know this, You ARE No-Good to anyone or anything, if you ARE Lost! What ever Choice you Make, everyone will understand and accept it, when they see that you are Happy in those things that you enjoy doing... But YOU Must Decide on that.... Just be Patient with yourself, and take The Time to think things through.... You WILL succeed! Good-Luck with it!
