I'm 16, need a job, no experience... where to begin?
Asked by Miso
I am feeling a bit overwhelmed right now because I haven't had a real job and I feel its too late to start because most people already have! I want a job this summer for both $ and experience, but mostly experience. I dont have any idea how to prepare a resume, what to put on it, how to apply for a job, what to look for, etc. I dont even know what jobs I want! My previous experience: dog walking / pet sitting baby sitting (I have only done it like 5 times though!) Counciler in Training for horse summer camp helping with horseback riding birthday parties for children volunteer work at stables, including helping w/ disabled children, poor city kids, cancer survivors, etc. I feel like I have no experience, is this enough? What real jobs should I start doing? I love the outdoors but cant do anything w/ standing up or walking because I am getting foot surgery soon. So no waitress jobs or no more horse jobs. I also love art. What are some ideas of where to begin, and some ideas? are you guys retarded? Did I not say that due to my injuries I CANT be a waiter / waitress? Thanks for not reading. are you guys retarded? Did I not say that due to my injuries I CANT be a waiter / waitress? Thanks for not reading.

Hey im in the same situation you are and you got way more job experience then me buddy! I think you will get one easier then a lot of other 16 year olds such as me. I think you should start with a basic job with a decent amount of pay, I suggest maybe a mall or a grochery store, avoid fast food resturants, atleast thats what im trying to do right now. In my opinion, try a mall or grochery store that pays a decent amount. with your job experience, im sure they will give you a job, take it from a fellow 16 year old. Good luck, to both me and myself lol

More and more of the major employers are reluctant to hire teens because the min wage is rising and very few teens are capable of the adult level work needed to justify the wage . Try applying with local mom & pop restaurants , grocery or retail stores that are not mandated to pay the higher fed min . Once you get a rep as capable , then you can use those references to get the majors to hire you . good luck >

Try to get a job as a waiter, its really good money and you develop alot of skills, it will help you socialize. Another good one is a job at a park because if you decide to work for the city the benefits are unbeatable..For these jobs at your aage you really dont need experience or a resume, just apply in many places and dress professional, just you going to school and loking for work should show how a serious, mature teenager you are. Good Luck$

Things you'll need before you begin- Social Security Card Possibly a Birth Certificate and Worker's Permit (Depending on where you live.)( where I live a worker's permit is acquired after you are hired but before you begin work.) Another form of government issued ID (I used my license) A list of people that can vouch for you, and their phone numbers and sometimes addresses. After you have the social security card/ID, go around to area stores and business and just ask if they are hiring. I recommend fast food restauarants, local businesses, grocery stores, and movie theaters. In my area most retail stores don't hire before 18, but if you have time it never hurts to check. Before you go out places, I'd also look a few of them up online and see if they have online applications. After you pick up your applications, go home and fill them all out. This can take a long time. Just be sure to sound polite and be honest. Afterwards take your completed applications back to the businesses you got them from, and wait. It took me about 15 applications and 2 weeks before I got 1 call back, I ended up with 2 total. I took a job at the local movie theater. Also, don't expect to make more than minimum wage. Keep trying, and if you don't hear anything it never hurts to call the business and remind them of your interest to work there! Also, if you are going to have foot surgery- from my experience, fast food/ movie theater concessions do take a fair amount of physical work, (lifting 35 lb boxes, ect.) So make sure what all the job entails before you take it. Good luck!

#1: RELAX. No one has any worthwhile experience at 16; if they do, their parents should be in jail; kids need to be kids, not worry about work at 16. #2: Google "resume examples" and "C.V. examples" to see how those are written. Check your grammar and spelling, writing like you wrote this question makes you look totally unqualified and unprofessional. - Group your experiences by category (e.g., working with children) and within it list experiences by dates (from-to), starting with the most recent one and going back in time. - List your interests and "unrelated" qualities (musical instrument, foreign language, etc.) at the end under "other." #3: Go for jobs that will teach you something for later, maybe: Radio Shack, Circuit City, gamer stores, etc., and if that fails, go for grocery stores and Jamba Juice and such, they always need help. Starbucks is a great place to work but they require some training, so maybe you can try that after high school, when you can dedicate more time and work for a longer time, even if half-time.
