My husband and I are contemplating a move to the Las Vegas area. My husband was a union ironworker; I am?
Asked by Mike L
wanting in the carpenter's union. He will have to start over as an apprentice because the work here (KC) slowed so much he had to find another job. I have very little carpenter's experience. Is the construction still booming there? Will have a difficult time in getting in and finding our first job? We have four kids, so the idea of not working is rather scary. It will take about everything we have to move. Thanks for taking the time to read this. We are not planning on raising our kids in Las Vegas. We are looking more towards the city of Pahrump and commuting.

Las Vegas is always expanding...that's a good thing if you're in the construction industry. Another good thing about Vegas is there's plenty of work in other industries (casinos, hotels, call centers, etc.), so it won't be hard to find a job while you're waiting to break into the construction industry. The cost of living is a bit more expensive in Vegas than it is in KC, hopefully you have a little bit of money saved up to prepare you for that. I say go ahead and make the move, there's a lot of opportunity in a city like Vegas. Stay away from those casinos though...Goodluck.

The construction boom has turned into a bust in Vegas. It is among the worst hit cities. If you are in KC now, you need to count on making at least 50% more in Vegas to have similar living standards. From the info you have given, I think you would be making a big mistake. Take a look at Tulsa, OK. Construction there is booming big-time, and the cost of living is cheaper even than KC.

I don't think the construction industry is booming anywhere, especially iron working and I don't think Las Vegas is the greatest place to raise kids - you should be doing research, calling employment agencies out there ahead of time to see what kind of jobs are available
