What does the education of a veterinarian involve?
Asked by <3 Mrs. Brown <3
I'm 18 and trying to find out about different careers. I used to be interested in veterinary medicine but i have no idea where to start. Can someone with experience in this field tell me a little bit about the education required?

To become a vet you will first need a 4 year degree from an accredited college or university (bachelors degree). Although not all schools require a bachelors degree, it will be in your best interest to get one and almost every student will have one. You can get a bachelors degree in ANY subject you like, provided you meet the prerequisites. Feel free to major in something that interests you. For ease of meeting prerequisites, a large number of students major in things such as biology, animal science, and zoology.
You will need to take certain prerequisite courses (varies by school) but tends to include
-1 year of biology w/ lab
-1 year of inorganic chemistry w/ lab
-1 year of organic chemistry w/ lab
-1 year of physics w/ lab
Some schools require calculus, biochemistry, animal science, animal physiology, etc.
Here is a link to a listing of all US veterinary schools that will take you to their website to check out specific requirements:

I would also check out and join this very useful forum:

You will also need to take the GRE (general records exam) and get a good score on it.
You then apply to veterinary school and hope you get accepted. It is a 4 year program that leads to a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. Most graduates then pursue a residency in their chosen area. During school you will typically do about 2 years of intense coursework and 2 years of rotations through all the different areas (including things such as small animal surgery, large animal surgery, anesthesiology, radiation, etc).
It would be in your best interest to contact local vet offices and vet hospitals and ask to shadow some vets to get a better idea of what they do and make sure it really is what you want to pursue.
If you get in the first time and stay on track, you will be 26 years old when you graduate vet school and begin your residency.
I work at a vet hospital.
