Which career earns more, less schooling and is more enjoyable? Ultrasound Tech or Physical Therapist?
Asked by snugglebug
I realize the two careers are very different and I have looked at both jobs extensively. Are both of these careers in high demand right now and do you think they will be around for awhile? I'd love to hear from Ultrasound Techs and Physical Therapists to hear your take.?

The first differentiation you need to make is if you want to be a physical therapist or physical therapy assistant. If you are looking for a two year degree, then I would assume a PTA. Comparing PTAs and US techs, US techs are currently making much more than PTAs. I know a good PTA who left the field to do as such. However, this job is currently paying a lot due to demand. Should the job market switch, pay might decline (the same can be said about PTAs). Yet, the advantage of PTAs over US techs is that US tech is a tenchology dependent career...meaning the job is only as stable as the medium. Should another superior form of imaging come along, US could become obsolete. Yet, as long as you change with the technology, you should be able to find steady employment. In contrast, PTA field is not necessarily technology driven...there will always be a need in this field for someone to do the hands on work. At this time, however, US techs are being paid about $10-20,000 more than PTAs. Now, if you were referring to PTs, this is a 6-7 year degree and will probably be guaranteed more steady employment and higher salary than either of the former two. The other advantage is that PTs do not hit a ceiling in their career as soon as PTAs and techs...there is room for them to move into administration and other positions.
I am a PT

They both take the same leangth of time for a degree. I am neither but If I were you I would locate them and speak face to face for a real revelation.... Be honest with them and they will be with you. Face to face is the only way!
