More than anything, your specialization is a signal for your next employer that you are interested and committed towards a particular management track. I say next employer since it seems typical for current employers to reposition MBA graduates at the speed that the graduates feel they deserve, unless they have used the fact that they are pursuing an MBA to their promotional advantage already. My experience with MBA's is that technical oriented individuals like engineers and software designers always tend towards operations or MIS specializations so it's not really a differentiating factor on a resume when considering their work experience. The real question, which I sense you are dealing with at the moment, is which way your "career" is headed. If you are considering working in a software related industry, a marketing specialization would be attractive in that you can leverage your experience and deep understanding of the business and track towards a valuable niche in marketing. This is something that a marketing person outside of the industry will never have. If you are considering working in an unrelated field. you might consider the operations specialization in that it would brand you as a strong and focused line-management candidate.
1) Got an MBA with a finance/international trade specialization while working as a general manager for a manufacturing business. 2) Am a Strategic Management professor for undergrads & MBA's
