Is it stupid to want to work as a waitress?
Asked by Julia
I'm a college gradute (tourism & travel agency management). I can work at a travel agent or at a hotel as a receptionist. But instead, I want to work as a waitress because it pays better, I can work at evening shift (I hate waking up early) and I don't like sitting when I work. My friends think it's a wrong decision.
What do you think?

Don't listen to your friends.
It is unfortunate that you discovered you do not want to work in travel after you went to school, but waiting table will allow you to pay off your student debt.

Well why did ya go to college? I would find a career now before you are 47 and still working nights and weekends with no benefits and retirement package. You can always work at a bar part time to supplement your income if ya want but your friends are right.

Being a waitress is one of the only jobs that you can have absolutely no education and still be able to support a small family. For that reason, it's great. The tips are fantastic and the atmosphere can be fun at times. It is stressful and can be unhealthy (depending on the restaurant) which may lead you to a place you don't want to be a few years down the road. I agree with the first answer though, you are going to want to have some sort of retirement package in place as soon as possible because of compounding interest and how fast and exponentially it compiles. I started a 401k for myself two years ago with only a 6% investment and I already have over ten thousand dollars (which will exponentially multiply over the years). So, get your foot in the door somewhere soon, and then go part time as a waitress or bartender to earn the extra cash.

No if you like standing for long periods of time, and taking orders and serving people go for it. But pick a real nice place where you can learn about wine and food. The best spots pay the most money.. So go upscale! But you can also be a tour guide....
