Numbers are really a very small part of accounting. Computers do the numbers now. The field is so varied- tax accounting, corporate accounting, cost accounting, auditing, information systems, government and not-for-profit and investigative accounting. You can be an independent CPA, or you can work for a company.
I've taken my entire degree online (Accounting Fraud Investigation) and will get my master's in Forensic Accounting.
It's not boring! It takes a lot of logic and the ability to see how things tie together, to sense when a balance just isn't what it should be, helping a company figure out the most cost efficient way to do business, and like me, hunting down the cheaters.
Statistics was a difficult class (LOTS of formulas) and be sure to study hard in Acct l and ll- they are the basis for everything that comes next. I was advised to take as many computer classes as I can afford as most accounting fraud is done through computers.
If you go to the Bureau of Labor Statistics web site, you will see that accounting is growing, and is predicted to do so for at least 5 years. My field is new, so I'll have to find out on my own!
