The career path is pretty variable. The two most common are probably:
1-Associate in major law firm for 3-6 years
2-In-house counsel somewhere
3-(optional) In-house counsel one or more other places
4-General counsel (either of company you're already working for or another one)
1-Associate in major law firm for 7-10 years
2-Partner in major law firm
3-General counsel (of major client)
You can look up the pay of the General Counsel of many public companies by looking at the proxy statement on file with the SEC. It seems that the low end on salary would be around $200,000, with $500,000 being more typical. Bonuses and equity-based compensation (stock options, restricted stock grants, etc.) could push the compensation, at least in a particular year, well up into the millions.
