How do hiring managers verify income from the previous employer ?
Asked by Jason S
I am switching jobs....How will the new hiring manager verify my income from the previous jobs? Also, how will they know my current position in my current job?

Hiring managers will verify previous salary with your former employers. And if you have signed a release statement for the company to perform a background check on you both parties are allowed to disclose that information. Some employers will ask that a prospective employee bring in a pay stub from the job they are currently at to verify this, some will do it when they call to verify previous employment.

they can't ask about salary - only position and how well you did your job. old employers aren't really allowed to say anything negative, but they can hint - like if you were absent alot they could say you will be lucky to get her to work for you. they would understand that hint.

The new employer doesn't give a damn what anyone else paid you. They are going to offer you a salary based on what they are planning to pay. Any questions asking about previous salaries are just a ploy to get you to lock in a salary range to see where you are coming from.

I have to disagree with one of the answers above: previous salary and commissions are a VERY important part of the decision making ability, at least in respectable, B2B sales jobs. Whether they can legally ask or not, most sales managers will ask this question in an interview, as it's a way to determine previous success (the more you sell, the more money you make). I believe salesguy.org listed it in their top 20 of the most common sales job requirements (they have a page on their site that lists the Top 20). I don't think I've every had a sales job interview where this question wasn't asked. W2s are the most common way to verify previous salary.
