I am a CPC
I work in a doctor's office, and I handle the coding and billing for the group practice. When a doctor examines a patient, he notes the diagnosis and any other procedures, DME that is needed i the patient's chart. I then receive the chart once the patient has left. I convert the written diagnosis (ie: high blood pressure/hypertention) to a code (ie: 401.9) using coding books like ICD-9 (diagnosis), CPT (procedure), and HCPCS (supllies and DME). Same goes for procedures & supplies, etc. Then I send in an electronic claim to the insurance. This is how the insurance companies determine how much to pay. They then reimburse the facility/doctors accordingly.
I went to an accelerated certification program for coding. It was a 10-month education - night classes. After I completed the course, I then took my CPC cert exam, administered through the AAPC. I received my CPC (certified professional coder). To work at a doctor's office you need either a CPC, CPC-P, CCS, or CCS-P. In a hospital, many facilities are requiring a CPC-H.
I have been working in the insurance and billing field for quite some time (handling precerts, billing, etc) so I was familiar with terminology and standard processes. This assisted in my career as a CPC greatly! In KY, you can make a nice living off of being a medical coder.
Hope this helps!
