Career Questions and Answers
Should I take the construction laborer job or not?
Asked by mantastic86
I got a college degree in social science in 2005. I was going to go to law school but too many lawyers out there and I dont even work in an office! I hate office work and hate sitting in an office all day. So I became a teacher instead. Then I got layed off due to cutbacks. Anyway, Im collecting unemployment now and seeking a MAJOR career change. I dont want to do sales, teaching, or customer service jobs anymore. I am so burned out. Im very good at "sales and teaching" but I dont like doing it. People stress me out. Im sick of it. Im a loner.
My greatest gift is my body. Im very physical and hands -on. Thats my greatest gift. So I thought about doing construction(concrete work). The pay is lousy $9.00/hourly compared to teaching $14/hour. The heat is brutal here in Florida and my skin will get trashed from the sun. But I would love the job change. Is concrete labor a dead end job? Im 40 years old and great shape. I will be poorer. But it may lead to other things. Should I go for it?

That's up to you. Why just a laborer job? There are other jobs in construction where, with a little training you can make good money. Look into a union apprenticeship program, a worker retraining program or a local, public vo-tech school.
If you are a loner take a look at being an over-the-road truck driver. You'll need a clean driving record and you'll have to take a company training program (along with a 1 year contract or longer) or go to a truck driving school. You'll make good money and you'll get to travel a lot. You won't have much of a social life and it gets boring as can be.
Take a look at some other "loner" jobs as well. Security guards often work alone and at odd hours. The pay probably isn't much better, but it's a lot easier.
