My employer has scheduled a mandatory meeting of all employees on sunday when I attend church. Is this legal?
Asked by MeiJ
I have indicated to my employer that during the meeting time (not during my normal working hours) I normally attend church. My employer has indicated that the meeting is mandatory for all employees. They choose Sunday because that is the only day they open later.

it is legal and if 'seekn2know' had read the provided link they would realize it is legal. you must be paid for the meeting but federal law does not mandate any kind of minimum amount of time for a shift. there MAY be a few states that do, there are also a few states that mandate one day off a week which could possibly effect this.

A:
Yes they can do this. They have to pay you for the time or a minimum of two hours. Plus, if it is over your regular 40 hours they owe you time and half. But they can schedule a meeting anytime. You don't want to go to a different mass but surely you can.

You have the legal right to freedom of religion. If the meeting time is scheduled during off hours you have the right to decline without retaliation. The link below has an entire article covering this

Yes it is, if they are calling for a major meeting on a Sunday (Believe me management does not want to do this) it usually means a major change, very major up to and including in todays market a downsizing or big policy change. Would not miss this one, as your job may be part of the meeting.

Yes it is. You really have entered a tug of war, and the best way to address this is to talk to your boss and tell him how important church is to you, most boss's would be understanding to that, providing your a good worker. If your not a good worker, maybe it's his way of trying to make you quit. Decide what's important and then perhaps look for another job.

Most churches offer more than one service. If you have to go to church at a different time or different day that week - then do so. Bosses don't like to give up their free time. So, if they are giving up their free time on Sunday....... The bosses are not going to fine a meeting time that will suit everyone perfectly. Sunday seems to be the best day for the majority. So, go to church at a different time....and plan on making the meeting.
