How to get a part time job at 16, with no working experience ??
Asked by JPD
I'm 16 years old, and I'm desperatly looking for a part time job. I have applied at places before, but I fear that the reason I can't get a job is because I have no working experience. What should I do to better my chances og getting a job the next time I apply ?

There are lots of opportunities for inexperienced workers. Check out grocery stores, restaurants (dishwasher, waitstaff, host, fast food), retail or clothing stores (Target, Walmart), etc. They often hire people with little experience. Or try babysitting, mowing lawns, painting, etc. If you do get an interview, remember to be professional and respectful to the interviewer. If you can show that you will be a responsible and hard worker, an employer will be more likely to give you a chance. Good luck!

When you fill out your application, hand it in. Being young and inexperienced you have to show enthusiasm and be friendly.

list all the experiences you had(volunteer, school, around neighborhood) that relates to a job skill. Also, look into youth employment centres and places that offer free training for a certain job position even if you have to pay for it. Near my area there's a youth employment centre that offer training for waitress but we have to pay in order to attend the training. Good luck, job search can be difficult but never give up and eventually sooner or later someone will call for you!

Most people have no working experience when they first try to get a part time job. All you have to do is show that you are willing and eager to learn, show how keen you are and tell them that you would be a hard worker. I think that you will find that you will have a part time very soon if you apply this attitude. I don't think that the reason you cannot get a job is due to your lack or working experience, it is probably due to the fact that there are so many other people looking for part time work. I wish you lots of luck xx

First of all DON'T do any get rich quick schemes - they are all a waste of time. If you want somewhere to give you a job you can't just give them your C.V. After giving your C.V out you need to follow it up with at least one phone call and another visit to the place. When you get to speak to someone say that you handed your C.V in and that you are very enthusiastic, and ready to start immediately if there are any positions available. Do this for several places and don't give up - if there is one place you would really like to work then go there as often as possible with a C.V, and phone them to ask about available positions very often. After a while they will know that you mean business and that you are very keen. Just handing a C.V in doesn't show your enthusiasm. All C.V's that are handed into a workplace generally get thrown in the bin in a few days - you need to phone them and go and talk to them, make your presence known. Don't worry about your lack of experience, employers always look for enthusiasm and energy - if you can show them that you are a decent hardworking individual, they would much prefer you to a more experienced person. And how do you proove to them that you are hardworking and enthusiastic? Phone them and visit them constantly showing them that you don't give up, and eventually you will get the job. Go and do it!! don't stop until you get a job.

You're 16. You will not need a CV!!! First of all, go to Craigslist. The people there usually want to hire someone quick. Or Call a fast food place (go to the website, then locater to find the number) and ask to speak to the hiring manager. Ask if they are hiring. Movie theaters hire anyone too. If you are trying to work in an office or fancy restaurant, you will definitely need experience.

Cleaning, kitchenwork, packing, running errands, gardening, babysitting, newspaper delivery are some of the jobs available. These jobs will be posted in local newspapers and billboards. A better option is to work from home on your computer - write articles, sell on eBay, make a website, take surveys. In some cases, you may have to set up an account in your parents or guardians name, and ask them to pay you, after they get the money for your work. More details are available at http://kj9.info
