Career Questions and Answers
Who makes more? Dental Assistant or Computer Technician?
Asked by Drew
I just got back from Basic training and AIT, but I'm in the National Guard. I am going to use my G.I. bill to go to school, but I cannot decide between these two career choices, just wondering who makes more money and about how much does each make? Anyone who has these career maybe could tell me if they like their work. Thanks

Well we salute you! They say 'if you love what you do, you'll never have to work a day in your life' -- to go with one's passion and think about salary second. (The dental assistant usually doesn't make nearly as much money as the other postee mentioned.) One should go with what their heart tells them to do -- the kind of job that they would do for free. How about doing some volunteer work (or job shadowing/observing): http://www.volunteermatch.org
For dental assistant, perhaps look at some dental books and the photos at some of the worst case scenarios including advanced dental disease and find out if feeling comfortable. The DA also needs a good short term memory and manual (using hands) dexterity.
General career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'computer, automated teller and office machine repairers', 'dental assistants' or whatever other career that piques one's interest.
Please forgo those private $$ schools and instead opt for the county vo-tech school or community college (perhaps non-credit course) as long as the program is accredited within the industry.
Please also steer clear of those online, for profit schools such as penn foster, stratford career, us career, university of phoenix, capella, strayer, devry, kaplan, kaiser and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit': http://www.capellauniversitysucks.us
http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search.

I am a Dental Assistant. I love my job and have it pretty good where I am at. Dental Assistants get great hours and good benefits as well. I know some people who are working at clinics making not much more than minimum wage. I work at a private practice and have 5 yrs experience. I began my career at my first office making about 35K a year and now am making about 50K. Don't know about computer technicians though, but hopes this helps you! Also, I live in Texas.
