Major in Paralegal and minor in Sign Language?
Asked by yellowslashred
I was originally planning on majoring in sign language and interpretation but I recently found out that its really hard to find a well paying job as an interpreter, even with a bachelors degree. Something else i had considered was becoming a paralegal, but Im still really interested in sign language, and I've already finished all of my level 1 ASL classes. Would it be a good idea to major in paralegal studies< or whatever it would be called and minor in Sign Language? What could my average salary be with an associates degree? (i live in Ohio) Also, if I later wanted to become a lawyer, would it be easier because i had finished all of my paralegal courses?

I'm not sure where you got the idea it's hard to find a well paying job as an interpreter, especially if you live in one of the larger cities in Ohio. If you're skilled, qualified and certified, you should have no trouble making a good amount of money in interpreting. It certainly isn't lucrative, but the money can't be he driving force for interpreters in the first place. Thats how we get burned out, tired, injured, etc. Interpreters in my area (not a major metro area) charge between 15 and 65 dollars an hour.
