What do human resource people typically do in a company?

im applying with a mid-sized company, and human resources caught my eye, I've heard a little about what human resources does, but if anybody can give me more info that would be greatly appreciated. Are bachelors degrees typically required?

I am a Human resource professional. Job responsiibilties of HR professional mainly includes, Recruitments, Selection, Training and developments, compensastion and benifites (including payrolling, leave management), Employee satifaction surveys, event management,policy making and keeping a track that people stick to these policies. And last but not the list giving pink slips(firing people) if anyone does not follow to any of the policies or violates any law which are in the company interest. Mostly human resource people say "no" to a lot of qualified candidates for a job out of fear that a manager will realize they have no real purpose.

I work in Human Resources. I answer phones, do payroll, help people at the door, do work for other people. Stuff like that.

EOE compliance and general labor law administration. Workforce planning. Recruiting. Diffusing & resolving worker issues. Depending on the firm, labor relations & union negotiations. Harassment issues of all types. Succession planning, safety, etc. etc. Yes, get a degree.
