The Silent Hero™
I failed to get a single parttime job this summer...do I suck?
Asked by The Silent Hero™
I began my job search in March. Sent out resumes, called employers, called back, called back, spoke to the managers, and nothing. Come May, I told myself "I'll definitely find some sort of work this summer", and continued the search, applying everywhere. Asked my friends about their job connections, followed up on them, spoke to the managers, handed in resumes, shook hands, and still nothing. I couldn't even find a hit in fast food; the person who took my resume couldn't recall any such thing when I followed up a week later. Can't tell you how frustrating it is to have employers tell you they'd get back to you, or to hear from one administator they're hiring only to find out from another administrator that they aren't. By mid-July I had really just given up. If I couldn't find work in the hiring season, they definitely wouldn't hire a guy who's going to stay for a month and a half then leave again in the fall for college. Now it's just about August, and with a few weeks before I'm packing up and leaving for college, I can't believe I couldn't get a single job. Really sucks, as my parents had to pay for the tuition and such with no support from me. They don't mind, but it still sucks that I couldn't contribute even a little. It seems jobs are only available to people who have inside connections, and even I couldn't get my friends to get my foot in the door. Really, is it this hard? Do I suck?

This is nothing unusual. It has always, in my memory, been difficult to find a job. It's been getting even harder as the years progress. You're not alone. Finding work is harder work than working.

It is all about timing. You need to stay persistant and go after jobs at the right time. Like food jobs, m-thurs between 2-4pm. they hire on-the-spot. Most places don't want just summer help anymore wither, there are too many people that need jobs for companies to have to settle with pt summer people

the economy is in bad shape right now whether most people want to believe it. so there aren't alot of jobs available and alot of people have been forced to take jobs that they're overqualified for so those entry-level type jobs that used to be filled by young people are no longer available. you tried really hard and that's what counts. you're going to college so just be satisfied knowing you will one day pay your parents back when your all successful.
