Does my career plan seem good?
Asked by DaltonCullen
Okay I've been home schooled for quiet some time and I've been slacking off and I won't be able to graduate till I'm around 20 or 21. I'm 16 right now. My plan is get my GED. Join the Army at 17. Stay in for four years. Go to Tulsa welding school and become a certified welder. Now I think that sounds like a pretty good plan. What do you think?

Well little one, I am not too keen on joining the army. I was in the army for 15 years, and got out right before clinton finished his administration. I knew where things were going to go, so I held on tight and joined the air force when they opened up a door to people who were prior enlisted (generally they dont do that). Ive been Attached to The Air Mobility Squad for over 8 years and thank god every day that I am no longer in the army. In fact, There is a squadrine here for pretty much everything. Including anything from working on air conditioning units, to welding. And life is very much like civillians have it. I deploy for only 6 months every 2 years or so, instead of the 18 months you would have to in the army. I am almost positive that 18 months is the all around time now for almost everyone.
Even the marines is a better way to go.
I had a really hard time in high school, and busted my butt to graduate on time. youve seen the kids that graduate as juniors? its possible to knock out classes all at once instead of taking study halls and some electives. if you bust you butt, you may be able to achieve a better life plan. My husband is also prior army, we met in Kuwait while on mission and got married soon thereafter. If you have got yourself a girlfriend, its a lot more family friendly to be in the Airforce also.
Anyway, Im partial to avoiding the army, I didnt enjoy the time i spent, but i didnt want to lose the benefits they give, i couldnt imagine the young kids now that go to kuwait (a safe zone now) and iraq. I wouldnt want to be there now. You couldnt pay me enough to get back into the army.
Ps. you gain rank in the army faster, but you get paid more in the AF
15 years army
8 years AF
plus i graduated HS.

Enroll in community college and then you won't need your GED. You can transfer into a four year college from there and you won't need to join the army (unless that's something you really want). It doesn't matter that your curriculum match that of the kids going to public school. You know more that you think even if you haven't completed the "school" hours. Enroll in classes that interest you but also some that will be beneficial in college like a general history, English and math.

it sounds okay i guess but how badly could you possibly have been slacking off to be five years behind at 16? stop being home schooled, go to public school, work your butt off, catch up, and go to college. if you have your heart set on getting a GED okay i guess. but joining the army at 17, especially NOW is just asking to get killed. for what? oil? stay in school man. meet some girls. have a life.

Good plan. Time to get yourself moving... I don't think you can take the GED until you are 18. And you need to study for it, so maybe you can spend your home schooling time preparing for the GED.
