Career Questions and Answers
Is my friend wasting time pursuing a career in photography?
Asked by toucansam456
He finds work here and there, lives at home, and is looking for a good, steady photography job. He can't find anything else where he is. He hears that New York and California is where he should be to go find a photography job, but I think it's a waste of time.
What do you think?

It's his life. He mooching off you? If he chooses to try his dream and fails, he can always say he tried. How many people never even try? Support him and see where it goes. Be there for him if he falls.

you can get paid $500 - $1500 for booking a wedding depending on quality and # of pics etc
(and lots of books at the library on starting a photog business)
for 1 wedding a weekend, for 4 weeks a month, your friend could make $2,000 to $6,000 a month
At 2 weddings a weekend, 4 weekends a month, your friend could make from $4,000 to $12,000 a month
Do you think he's wasting his time?

Photography is unfortunately not a waste of time. It is an art in itself, and does bring in the money if you are good and can get decent contracts. There are different areas that can be focussed on.
Of late Wedding Photography is at a boom, and would be a good avenue to pursue. He can even attend a Photography school to become a Professional Photographer.
A good way to start out if by entering Photography Contests, and start small. Whether or not he has to actually travel overseas is up to him to decide.
If he is just starting then staying local would be a good starting point.
Hope this helps.
