CFA is not necessary for work as a financial controller (FC). CPA is more useful asw FCs are basically very senior accountants. You need to understand:
budgets and forecasting (cash flow and profit)
understand financial statements (in particular IFRS vs GAAP)
management reporting and perhaps some board reporting
good communication skills to deal with all levels of business
maintinaing the general ledger, or at least understand it
maybe a little bit of tax knowledge would help
As an FC in australia, your salary would vary from 100 to 150k per year + bonus. Probly about 2/3rds of this amount if your based in the US.

A working knowledge in financial statement analysis and cash flow modeling are a must. An academic background in finance and/or accounting would be preferred.
A certification/designation would also be helpful (and probably a prerequisite at a large company), and the two best ones would be Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
