Will a career in purchasing (non-fashion) and a fashion degree help me get into fashion buying/merchandising?
Asked by broken promise
I work in non-fashion purchasing and am working towards a fashion degree - will the purchasing job help me get a career in fashion buying/merchandising? Or is my current job no help at all in trying to get into fashion? I have office and fashion retail experience already.
TIA!

Well, it's one of those jobs thats relatively easy to get - at a junior level - i.e. you will find a company to take you on if you have the right face, flare and attitude... but don't expect a wage/salary even approaching minimum wage - infact dont expect a salary!!!
Your current purchasing role will have some influence as to the validity of your CV, however don't rest on your laurels - where are you interning this summer? Where are you approaching for sponserhip mentoring for next year? Who do you know i nthe industry... who do you know at head office at your previous retail positions...
Don't expect an easy ride... but do expect lots of competition - people tend to try to enter as a 'buyer' to migrate towards design, everyone is aware of this, so I can see your previous experience may set you appart...
keep at it... and as they say... its not what you know, it's who you know... and if you don't know anyone - get better internships!!!
drop me a line if you're struggling.
