How can my husband get hired on an offshore rig with no experience?
Asked by KathyY68
He is currently working with KBR in Iraq doing safety. He would like to continue safety, but knows he has to probably start at the bottom. Please point me in the right direction so we can bring him home from Iraq.

Okay, first of all, he has a lot of experience! It's just not on oil rigs.
Many offshore rigs don't have a large enough staff to warrant having a safety person on each rig. There may be positions I'm not aware of that travel around from one rig to the next.
Why does the job have to be on an oil rig? Yes, they pay really good money, for the time you work. (They usually work 7 on and 7 off, so remember to divide the salary by 2 to figure out your real weekly income.) If he decides to go on a rig as a laborer (the entry-level position) he's likely to earn less than if he gets a good job as a safety engineer on land.
My recommendation would be for him to start applying for safety jobs in the "oil patch" or your area, that don't involve living overseas.
It sounds like both of you are concerned about his security...but you don't want to give up the lifestyle that his high salary brings. I'd urge you both to reconsider that. Which is more important -- a high salary, or his safety?
Ex was an offshore electrician.
