Is it possible to work part time while getting your ADN in nursing?
Asked by sweetnsassy
I'm trying to save as much money as I can, but I will still need to work once I start nursing school. I don't want to take any more student loans as I have a BA and lots of debt to go with it. I was hoping to work part time, but is it possible to work, given the work load of nursing school?

I worked 2 jobs and went to nursing school full time. My last year of school I had a newborn child. Now, I would not recommend this to anyone, but when I graduated I didn't owe any money. Was it crazy and stressful? Absolutely. But you do what you have to in order to survive. And in the end it's definitely worth it. It can be done. My advice to you is to listen to your body. It will tell you if you're doing too much.

I worked pretty much full time my first year of nursing school as a phlebotomist. After first year I got a contingent job at the hospital my clinicals were at. Second year was a lot tougher but I still worked but only part time. I think if your a good student, have good study skills and can manage your time well you should be able to work. There is A LOT of reading be prepared to not have a life while your in school and working!!!!

possible yes, probable no. Nursing school is very demanding. Lots of people try and they work as long as they can, but eventually have to make a choice between the job and school. Things get tougher as you get along.

Depends on how part time you will be. Full time is just crazy, and any sane person would not try. Part time is definitely do-able, but you will find yourself tired and stressed out. One credit hour of nursing courses feels like three times that. It's not like other courses where you might have had an easier time floating through without really working for it. Nursing school is challenging for even the best students. It's not the content itself that's hard, it's the amount of work you have to do, the amount of reading, the number of papers, etc.
