Want a career in welding - unsure where to go?
Asked by bigblockletters
I want to go to college and get a degree in welding and move out to L.A., but I'm not sure where to start - what colleges are the best for welding, I live in Arkansas. I know I don't want to be an underwater welder, I was thinking like, pipe fitter or something along those lines.
I realize that 'college' isn't the correct term. I just wanted to know if there were any schools, vocational or tech schools that offered degrees in welding that are really good.

Look into your vocational colleges within your state. There should be a correlation of vocational colleges within the state. In Louisiana there is the Louisiana Community and Technical Colleges - - http://www.lctcs.state.la.us/ you should have something similiar in your state. Locate the college that offers welding. Enroll within the college and complete the program - at the end their should be a licensure test you should take. It may be regional or national. If it is national you will be able to take it and apply it to whatever state. If it is regional then you might want to consider taking the licensure exam for the respective state you are interested in going to.
It is likely better that you get your training in the south. It will be financially better on your pockets as opposed to L.A. (I assume you are speaking of Los Angeles). The cost of living is much higher in California and in specific Los Angeles than the vast majority of cities in the south.
What classifies a program as good would be if it is accredited and the rate at which it employs it graduates. There are also some schools in texas that advertise the vocational fields - but I can't think of the name right now.

you dont go to college for welding. you go to welding school. sometimes there will be a technical or vocational school that calls itself a college but they arent a university type program. they teach vocations like carpentry or welding or masonry and such.

man trust me you don't go to school to be a welder unless you do underwater welding which is where the money is and i don't advise being a welder hard work for little pay
