Philadelphia area has lots of unions in those kinds of trades - look on internet for IBEW 98 - that's the local Union for Electrical workers - you probably have to have some basic training or education in electronics and pass a test to get into the apprentice program - apprent program lasts about 4-5 yrs - you probably have one day of school every other week - other days you will be working, hopefully - usually apprentices are the last people to get laid off when it's slow, because they cost less and need to stay working to get thru the apprent program - probably start at $13-16 an hr and get raises every 6 months or so, when you pass the test to go up to the next level (8-10levels total) in 4-5 yrs, you reach journeyman status and by 2013, you'll easily be making $40-50 and hr in the Phila area plus great benefits. not sure if you have to apply for a job with a company first that uses union laborers or not - check the union website for details
I am the Controller for a major HVAC contractor in Philly - we use 25+ unions in PA, NJ, DE in plumbing, steamfitters, electricians, sheetmetal and other specialty trades
