I agree. You can go to your states department of corrections website and research career opportunities. Apply for the position that you want and they send you to school/training. My father has been a prison guard (ahem, I mean "correctional officer") for the past 15 years. He only had to go through six weeks of training. They do continuing education every year so that the guards may keep up with their skills and the state laws.
Good Luck!!

go to college, join the sheriff department and when you graduate their academy, they'll put you directly to prison guard, may last 5-10 years as one

Please do keep in mind that those shows have scripts and that it may be a lot more intense than on television :) For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'correctional officers' or such.

Please steer clear of those online, for-profit schools such penn foster, US career, stratford career, ITT tech, university of phoenix, capella, kaplan, strayer, keiser, everest, devry, walden and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit': http://www.capellauniversitysucks.us
http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search.
