What is the likely hood of my dad 46 with a bachelors getting a job in law enforcement?
Asked by caitie
My dad has worked in law enforcement all his life. From police officer to security officer. He has many recognition. He will be getting his bachelors in Sociology in may. The problem is he saw something at work that he should not have. It was not illegal. Now they gave him an option choose quit at the end of the school year or be fired. It is a nice option I suppose they could have fired him the next day. They cut back his over time and denied all vacation time. My dad works for a private non religious school to get my brother a senior there through free. I am worried about his age and age discrimination. Then I am worried I will have to quit school to help my family out, getting a better job. I already have two and go to school part-time. He would fight it but he figured they would say they caught him sleeping on the job or something like that. Then it would be his word against his supervisor.

did he witness something illegal or unethical happen or did he look at a file or something he shouldn;t have?

Ok - your father needs to get legal advice about the predicament he's in .... it may be that their threats to fire him are hot air - a means of covering someone elses butt.....the point is they feel he is a threat to them because of what he 'saw'.... he should not lose his job because of this - this is a situation of someone elses making - but they're trying to penalise your dad..... they can cut back on his overtime - but they can't deny him vacation time he is legally entitled to .... I suggest he uses some of the time he legally allowed to take off to visit a lawyer specialising in employment law..... Unfortunately ageism and age discrimination is something all us older ones face (your father is younger than me!) ... it's illegal but there are back doors employers use - there's nothing to stop them..... which is all the more reason for your father to fight for his job......
