What should I do at uni next year, vet, vet tech or vet nursing?
Asked by Hannah B
I've always wanted to be a vet, however after doing some work experience at places, I realise I do not want to be stuck in a clinic all my life.
I did some work experience at a zoo as well, and I really like the aspect of a zoo keeper being outdoors, bonding with the animals, and also giving talks to visitors/educating the public. (I really interested in providing awareness about conservation). BUT I am also interested in the medical care side of things, so I do not just want to become a zookeeper without any medical knowledge.
Zoo vet would be interesting, but it seems like a lot of their time is occupied and there isn't much opportunity to bond with individual animals as well as much time to give keeper encounter/talks to visitors.
So I was thinking about vet nursing. I have met a few of zoo keepers who started out as vet nurses. I would also be interested in teaching at vet school (either teaching vet students or vet nurse students)
I am wondering whether next year I should do pre-semester vet (which is the same as pre-semester vet tech) with a chance of not getting into either of them (and having to do something random for 1/2 a year), or should I apply directly into vet nursing, which once you're selected, you're automatically in (with the opportunity to upgrade to vet tech at a later stage)?
Provided I get in first go these are my options:
Vet - 5 years fulltime
Vet tech - 3 years fulltime
Vet nursing + upgrade to vet tech - 2 years fulltime, 2 years parttime (2 years I could do whilst already working as a vet nurse)
If I did vet tech/nursing I would also do a certificate in captive wild animals. (1 year part time I would do it after vet tech or IN BETWEEN doing vet nursing/vet tech)
I would not be able to do vet nursing by itself (2 years) because it is a diploma and my parents (and me actually) want me to get a bachelor's degree, so that isn't an option.
Got any advice for me?
Thank you for your time and effort answering this, I appreciate it!!
