temp.agencies and office jobs?
Asked by wo123
Does anyone have any experience with a temp.agency and getting office jobs like accounting clerk, bookkeeper or anything like that. I just recently got a degree in Finance and have desperately been trying to find a job that relates to my major so I could get experience. The problem is that these temp.places just keep giving me crap jobs like cashier, warehouse worker, general labor, etc...Is it even worth it to go to a temp.agency in my situation? I have even told one of them to might as well not even call me if they are just giving me these types of jobs. I have even talked to them about this but they just say they will check it out...I know the basics of accounting, know MS Word, excel, powerpoint, etc...but this is getting pathetic... I almost feel like my degree was a waste of time (did get a decent GPA of 3.3 and 3.4 in major GPA).. :( It seems that these agencies just put you to jobs that relate to your prior work history, which leads me to beleive it is almost just a waste going with them because all my jobs have been in customer assistance and general labor. argh I wish I would have done an internship now, even then though I wasn't free during the summers cause of my national guard comittment. Thanks for all the suggestions. I have a entry level/low level bookkeeping interview in a few hours. Plus my schools career fair is coming up in 9 days and I already made an rsvp for an interview with one company already. Hopefully I get a good position soon, if not I really dont mind working at something like bookkeeping/accounting clerk for like a year-year and half (for experience) and then going for something more later on. Also CRAZYFROMLA I have applied for some jobs already through usajobs.gov, right now I am in the process of applying for a tax compliance officer job (even did the job simulation which I thought was easy but thats because I took an individual income tax course in college)...Also a mission support specialist job through the border patrol. But those jobs could TAKE forever to get it seems like and I am going to have to take some other job in the meantime. But you are right about former military and gov. jobs, that is my MAIN career goal right now, to get a job in the government in the accounting/finance field, my dream job is to work for the IRS and I will always keep applying for a position there.

That's how I became an accountant. They aren't a waste entirely but they sell human capital, they don't care if you're happy or not. We are in a recession, though, so maybe there's nothing else to give you.

I work in accounting support and I used to work for temp agencies for a long time. In the past few years, they have left a lot to be desired to where I've had to file a formal complaint against Robert Half Intl.(Accountemps). Anyhoo, since you have military history I would recommend going to government agencies and public schools and find out if they have a temporary pool that you could work out of. It's a good opportunity to make contacts while working and you may even get some benefits after working so many hours. Best wishes!

i would certainly put your cv on S1 jobs, scotcareers, etc. i myself worked for an agency and we used to do the same. Try office angels ...massive agency but also offer only permanent positions, Have you tried doing a cover letter along with your cv and do a mass sending for firms and companies around you
