Apply for any clerk/receptionist positions, and when hired learn as much as you can about: Office Machines/software Telephone systems Meeting Planning/Logistics Company Organization structure Once you've mastered that, always ask if you can help - and if someone presumes that the task is above your skill set - explain (professionally) the skills you have acquired and what you are capable of and more than likely they will allow you to do it once to prove you can. Every opportunity you have to shine and do your best, do it. Also dress like an Administrative Assistant (especially if you work for a man). I dont care what anybody says - your boss wants you to be good, look good and smell good. They want that nurturing. And they want to be represented well. My boss is the happiest when I intercede on his behalf and head off problems. Also if you can, work in an office where you are the only administrative support person - that way if it is your first job in a while by default you will have been the Administrative Assistant; therefore you will be able to build on that. Hope this helps.
That is how I have built my career, and I only have a hs diploma, some college and a Secretarial certification.

I'd recommend signing up with a temp agency, or even several of them. Admittedly, with the economic situation being what it is now, that line of work might have slowed down considerably, but I've certainly found that it gave me great office experience in a variety of settings, both private and governmental. Temp agencies want their employees to be effective and to maintain the agency's good reputation, so they offer training programs for the people they employ, to become familiar with basic computer use, common office applications, and office equipment, and that training won't cost you anything. Then later, after you have a bit of experience being a temp, you'll be in a much better position to shoot for an admin. assistant job.

I live in The Colony, Texas. I'm currently a corporate receptionist. I have never worked before and it was really hard for me to find receptionist jobs too. I went to Express Personnel, it's a temp agency and they helped me find this job. So don't give up and keep trying. PS- Express Personnel is located next to Krogers, on 121 and I35.
