As a nurse let me first strongly encourage you NOT to be a nurse. The profession is just not for the patients anymore. And, the staff are overworked, are indeed quite understaffed to satisfy budget needs, and underpaid for what is expected of them (again due to the budget.) I would suggest dental hygiene. Less responsibility. Nice perks as most Docs take their employees on cruises. And you will get nice teeth.
Me! I always wanted to be a nurse and I'll be darned if you don't even get to spend time with your patients these days! Its run, run, run. Chart this. Push all the dilauded and phenergan this person wants even if you know their BP is in the gutter. (Yeah I got that order from MDs a lot.) It just is not what it should be, nursing that is.

I hate it when bitter people answer questions. an LPN/LVN will never make the $$ a dental hygienist will. But the school is not as difficult either. If you want to be in nursing go RN, the LPN/LVNS get all the "grunt" work. They are under appreciated - underpaid and overworked. Dental Hygiene is a more constant environment and, even though my boss has never sent us on a cruise, there have been other perks. and you don't have to deal with sick people (if they are that sick they reschedule), people don't die on you routinely,, and even though there is some anxiety - most people are friendly and its fun. Depending on what state you are in, dental hygiene school can be difficult to get in to. but don't let that sway you. there were 500 applicants for 18 spots when I got in, and I didn't have straight A's or tons of pre dental experience. I just knew I wanted to do it and I would be good at it. good luck to you
