Actually, in the lab are 2 different positions: the MLT or medical lab technician (which is an associates or a tech school degree and is the one I think the other posters are referring to). This is comparable to the surg tech which is also a training position. Also in the lab is the MT (CLS) or medical technologist (clinical lab scientist). This is a 1 year training program AFTER a 4 year bachelors degree. This is a much higher paying job. Around $30/hr to start. Both the MLT & the MT (CLS) can be explored on the ascp web (american society of clinical pathologists). Both require formal training & a license. I would look at adds in your area to get salary info for all these however. Try puremedical.com for some salaries. The lab is open 24/7 so there are all shifts available. Surgery--not so much. Most are done in the day unless emergent.
MT (ASCP) PA-C

Surgical tech pays more. You might not have surgeries at night unless you are on call and have emergencies. The lab tech works around the clock. Both are stressful, doctors want lab results immediately and surgery has to be perfect of course.
