If you had the choice to either become an RN or a Dental Hygienist, which would you pick and why?
Asked by mini_may04
What are the pros and con's between the two. Between the two what one offers cheaper schooling, less schooling, more pay, better hours? I originally wanted to become an RN, but I have recently heard that becoming a Dental Hygienist is easier and pays better. What are your thoughts?

I have two friends going through hygienist school right now, and I have tons of friends who are RN's. The hygienist school is longer than RN school. Most all of the RN's I know were out of school in 2-2.5 years. The hygienist's will be in for nearly 4 years. RN's make more $ - in my area, and you have more opportunities, you can get a Bachelor's or Master's in Nursing and go into management, whereas you can't with hygienists. The RN's I know either work (2) 12 hour shifts and (1) 16 hour shift, or they work 80 hours in one week, and are off for a week at a time. Most of the RN's I know make 50k-70k annually, whereas hygienist's (in my area) earn 35k-45k.

don't think about the pay you need to think of something you would enjoy being an rn many people say is a rewarding experience and enjoy going to work helping people making a difference. Being an rn i heard you get better hours cause they ask a lot if you want to work extra and i heard they give good raises but then it could matter which location you work. Being a dental hygienist i heard you start having trouble hearing well that's what my friend said about his wife saying he think the tools making sharp noises is making his wife very hard of hearing. The other thing is would you really enjoy cleaning peoples teeth especially kids..
