It depends on what you want to know, but if you just have basic queries, you can usually find the information online.
The majority of UK legislation is available online - it's just a case of spending hours researching it, and then trying to decipher it when you eventually find the right information. If you don't speak legal-ese you may need a lawyer to decipher it for you eventually, but you could probably find out preliminary information before you go and speak to them, so that you know whether it's worth the effort and you'll be able to cut down the time that you spend there.

Some firms offer a free half hour. You just need to ring one who specializes in your particular case and ask. After that time you're usually on your way to them understanding why youre there at least. Any follow ups will cost you the going rate after that. You could also try the citizens advice bureau which is free and can often point you in the right direction. Good luck.

Any good lawyer always gives the first 30mins for free because they will want to see if your case is something they want to take aswell as for your benefit.
