Asked by lucy s
What would be the usual leaving present after 8 years work for the leaving person from the old employer? I am just curious....... what is the usual leaving present after 8 years work for the leaving person from his old employer? I am sure it is always different, but what would be normal? Are there any rules for it? Financial bonus after that long working period? Please let me know about your experiences and maybe the real rules for it. Thank you.

There are no real rules for it. In the UK anyway, it is certainly not the norm for the employer to give a present at all. What is more common is that they will do a collection around whoever is appropriate - maybe just your team, or maybe the whole office, or maybe the entire company if it's only small - and then obviously buy whatever they can afford from the collection, whatever they feel is appropriate and whatever they feel you'd like. People can contribute as much or as little as they'd like. If you've been there a very long time then you'd probably get more. If you've done a job that's involved working with lots of different people then you'd get more. So this present is from your colleagues, not your employer. I've never heard of anyone getting a financial bonus.

It is unusual for the company to give a leaving gift after 8 years, particularly if the individual is leaving rather than say, redundant. The only rules would be in your company handbook.

I've never heard of anything like that. When a person retires, it is fairly common for coworkers or the company to throw a party for the person - some companies will give a gift, or sometimes the coworkers will take up a collection for a gift. If a person just leaves to go to another job, it would be rare for the company or even coworkers to give a gift, although the coworkers might take the person out for pizza and a beer or something.
