Is it common that someone applying for wait staff kind of has no professional references?
Asked by N N
With regards to personal and professional references, such as people that the applicant knows personally, such as a teacher, dentist, pastor from church etc....Is it common that someone applying for a job will not have any references such as these, but only has references who are family and maybe just a friend from school who is their peer, is this common? Is this acceptable?

I don't have any professional references either so there wasn't much I could do, just explain to the manager when you hand in your application that you don't have any and give a reason why (for me it was because I'm only 19 and the job I worked at for nearly 4 years was me working by myself so I honestly had no one that I could use!) As far personal references you aren't supposed to use family and managers don't like it when people just list their friends.. I use some of my parents friends that know me. But if you're young it should be more acceptable esp. if you don't have a lot of work experience.

It will not make you look like the best person for the job. Everyone should have personal references. Pastors, teachers, past employers, neighbors, etc.
