Truck drivers are in demand from what I understand. Our there companies that will let me drive trucks between October and February so I can tend to my lawn business between the months of March thru September? Will I get any benefits working half a year as a truck driver?

It will be hard to find a deal like that. Might be easier at a small local company or if you know someone in the position to hire or get you hired.
Especially if you don't yet have your license, those are the worst times for a new driver to be on the road because of the weather.
(unless you will only run in a designated are in the deep south)
Usually when you first get your license you want to work about a good year solid because that is the foundation of your career.
The problem of needing to be in 2 places at one time is what I list as one of the disadvantages of trucking. With what your needs are though, it is not impossible to find that situation, its just not going to be easy.
One way of doing it though, depending on where you live, is to sign up with temporary agencies that provide drivers to companies just like temporary agencies for regular jobs. In larger cities like Atlanta some temporary agencies for truck drivers will have benefits. A lot of newspapers will have jobs by these agencies in larger cities.
You are right, it is a very good career to be in. Solid and secure no matter what the economy goes through.
There is a shortage of drivers now (check the newspaper any where you go, today and tomorrow) and believe it or not the economy will experience a lot of growth after the worst of this current economic set back.
There will never be enough drivers to fill the open positions because too many people drive before finding out what it takes so there is high turnover. So I would go ahead and get your cdl man even if you are not yet ready to hit the road in case you get tired of the lanscaping. Good luck on your decisions.
