Question about house cleaning?
Asked by surfergirl
I'm 20 years old, in college, and looking to make some extra money. I've thought about starting a house cleaning business and I'm just wondering if anyone thinks I'd be successful in doing so. What would be the best way to get the word out and what would be a reasonable price to charge?

Best Answer:
yes, you probably would.
You need to make a check list of the services you are willing to perform.
Not everyone cleans toliets or windows.
Go through each room in the home and go over it with the perspective customer, when you agree on what you are going to do make the customer sign the agreement and give them a copy.
This prevents problems later.
Buy your cleaning supplies at the dollar stores to save money.
Find out if your customer is allergic to any cleaning smells or chemicals, if they prefer you to use their supplies or your own.
Elderly people and single people are your main customers.
I used to charge $30.00 a week and I came 1 day a week and spent about 1.5 hours cleaning house. I would clean the tub with Dow bathroom cleaner and the toliet and sink, if that was too dirty I would charge alittle more. I always did a walk through with the checklist before to agreeing on a price.
I dusted, vacuumed, cleaned the rest rooms, mopped kitchen and bath floors, Knocked down cobwebs, Cleaned my kitchen cabinets, countertops and the top of the stove and the front of all the appliances.
If there is anything specific your customer would want done or not done write that down.
I had one customer who could no longer go up and down stairs and every week I ran too loads of laundry for her, while I cleaned.
She would hang and fold them I just had to take them downstairs run them and bring them upstairs in the basket.
I charged 35.00 for that customer, and extra $5.00 for the laundry business. People won't do it it you charge too much, if I did an office or business, I never charged less than $50.00 but average person it was $30.00 a visit, and they could pay me to come more than once a week if necessary.
I set up a schedule in my MS OFFICE schedule calendar.
So I knew where to be each day.
I always called before I went there to verify the cleaning appts for the next day or the morning of the appt.
because older people forget or get sick or have doctor appts.
I had one customer that I walked her dog and charged an additional $10.00 twice a week for that. So charge alittle at first and keep flyers and business cards give them to your customers and say 10% off your next weeks cleaning service if you refer me and they take my service.
The down side to cleaning however, is you might want to look at being insured or bonded. I have never had it, but, I have a friend who does and she says it is because she had a cleaning friend accused of stealing by and old woman and she thinks the truth is the old woman lost, forgot or something what she did with it. but bottom line is they tried to sue her. They were unsuccessful.

Business can mean many things...I'll just assume you'll be working with others( at least 1 other person).
This would be a relatively easy thing to do, only you'll need to advertise.
You can simply advertise by printing out hundreds of posters, and paying a minor to hang them for you. ( Preferably someone you know, and trust)
You would need to provide a phone on the poster, a phone number that you can almost all ways pick up. You would then make appoints and wallla. There you go.
Pricing would be by hour...perhaps 12-15$ an hour, per person working.
