What else can a Medical Technologist do on the job?
Asked by Tiff B
I am currently going to school to be a medical technologist at USF. I was wondering if there was other things that we can do except for looking in a microscope. I would like to work at a medical examiners office or at a fertility clinic of some sort. Do the jobs responsibilities open up if it is a smaller place? I just don't like to sit in one place all day, I like to do a variety of things and work with patients on some level.

Yes. The skills you learn as a MT (more than just a microscope) such as gas chromatograph, ELISA, PCR, etc can get you jobs in forensic labs and the FBI labs (where you do things like paint comparison, alcohol testing, drug testing etc); research labs (could include fertility with some more training); the Red Cross in their blood processing areas, industrial labs etc.
